Dulcimania is an Orange County, CA group that performs traditional folk music on the Hammered Dulcimer and other instruments at coffee houses, receptions, weddings, benefits, private parties and for just plain fun. They join with other musical friends on occasion and have played bi-monthly at Alta Coffee in Newport Beach for 22 years. They have also performed at the Heritage Hill Candlelight Tours, Southern California Dulcimer Heritage (SCDH) Harvest Festival of Dulcimers, Knotts Berry Farm, Art-a-Faire, the Center Club of the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Oak Glen and on the KSBR radio show Folk Roots.
Dulcimania focuses on tunes from the Celtic lands (Ireland, Scotland, Wales) but also play folk music from many other countries as well as modern compositions done in the traditional style. Their choice of instruments, the hammered dulcimer, is an ancient trapezoid-shaped wooden instrument played by striking strings across its face with wooden hammers. Its tone reminds many of the harp, piano or mandolin. The instrument seems to have originated in ancient Persia.
